I found this:
It is located on the transmission where the speedometer cable used to go. On yours open the hoold and look down on the drive4r's side by the firewall and you should see it. Should take a ten millimeter to remove the bolt that holds the retainer.

my info is based off of a 03 altima which should be the same. the speed sense wire is blue/yellow and is located in pin #9 at the instrument cluster. If you have the mid model stereo or the bose system the speed sense can be found behind the radio and it's color there is PINK.

Actually the speed is judged by turbine shaft rotations and pulse generator engine speed those signals are sent to the unified meter and spedo assembly where the signal is processed and sent to the ECM and TCM. The pulse generator is driven off of the Final drive and is held down with 10mm bolt. Right where you thought it was. Turbine shaft sensor is above the left axle behind the gear box. P0500 VSS code or P0720 trans code. I have never seen either one fail on 2003 and up Atimas.
