If service is not to God, then the service is to ourselves, not others.

What is our motive for serving others? Isn't it usually to make ourselves feel better? For example, I feel sympathy toward a beggar. Sympathy is a feeling and I would feel bad if I did nothing so I give the beggar some money. I have no idea whether the beggar will use the money wisely or whether the beggar is truly happier but I do know that now I don't feel so bad. If you look at it this way, I used the beggar to help alleviate my bad feelings. We always give more to those to whom we are sympathetic instead of giving it to those who have more need. So service to mankind turns out to be service to our own feelings.

But if we believe in God, then we have an obligation to know what God says about the situation because God is the moral authority. He made the system and He knows what is best. Therefore if God says to help someone, then we are to help regardless of our feelings of sympathy.

Service to mankind is not necessarily service to God, or to governments. Service to mankind is a work dedicated to all the inhabitants of the world; a work everyone can enjoy and will better our life. The Nobel prize focuses on this. You may want to research a little more about individuals who have already been awarded this prize.

Jesus was asked pretty much the same question. He responded with the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Mankind is your neighbor in these days of swift travel and instant communication. Read it. Then go thou and do likewise.

Matthew 25:36
I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'

Basically, Jesus is saying that we're all in the same family, and by taking care of each other, we're indirectly taking care of Him. It can be the smallest thing, from holding the door open for someone, to something large like donating a kidney. But it all boils down to "Love thy neighbor."
