SADLY, I think that they would not allow an Atheist into office and if they did they would not really respect him/her.

I am an Aussie and we have the same religious BS in our politics, which I am strongly against...
I believe that no religion of any kind what-so-ever should be a part of politics or law...
There is no proof that the Christian God exists, so why should I abide the law that is governed by this assumption !!??
I am happily Pagan, and we abide many different laws that are basically common-sense and unfortunately the inane laws passed by our religious politicians....
I am Wiccan, and I will tell you straight here and now, if USA and Aussie, just to name two countries, were run by Wiccans, who are far more spiritual than any Christian...
There would be no wars, we would be about the business of healing The Gaia, the Earth's Spirit...
No more exploitation of the earth's resources, bugger big business and the greedy share-holders, we would stop mining for lots of minerals, no more cutting down forests, no more hunting Whales, Seals, Dolphins etc..
We would endorse euthanasia, as I believe it is everyone's rite to die with dignity, not be shackled to the Christian BS...
I've said enough, but you get my point....
Blessed Be... )O(

Because all members of congress are politicians. They only pretend to be what they think will win the most votes. No honest person can ever win an election in this country. They must say they believe in religion and christian religion whether they privately do or not. That is where the votes are. Look at the current crop of political prostitutes running for president.

People are people so the odds are that there is an atheist and other fringe members among them but, yes, it is political suicide in the eyes of their peers so they are loathe to admit it. There are examples all over the place (though while I try not to judge people, I take satisfaction when the politicians are proven hypocrites); there is the example of the anti-gay senator that spoke of hell and non-humans in regards to homosexuality that as it turned out, he had been using a male prostiture for 5 years. I have little opinion about his lifestyle, but the fact that he persecuted so many for so many years and then it turned out that he was one of those selfsame people that he mistreated, I revel in the irony!

I am an intelligent and rational person. I know God exists for reasons obvious to those who don't close their minds to answers before the question is asked.
I am also an American who votes. I have intelligent criteria when I vote. Atheists by their denial of God also deny the rules which I use when deciding for whom to vote.
American voters by a vast majority also believe in God, and if conscientious also make election decisions in a similar manner.
Politicians, by the nature of their chosen profession, avoid burning bridges with the voters. So, their may be one or more atheists in the congress, but for them to proclaim their disbelief in God would be political suicide. Therefore, as atheists who have no set rules, they would feel free to lie about this matter with (they think) no repercussions.

It is political. In the UK, recently, religion in politics has become important as the Muslim population are in general religious voters and would rather vote for a christian than someone who expressed no religious affiliations. Tony Blair used this trick and despite his illegal war in the middle east, still gained a majority of the Muslim votes.

I'm sure some of them are atheists, and I'm pretty sure that most are functionally atheists. But I'm sure also that many have real faith.
Would you vote for a person who has no religious affiliation? Where do they stand on issues? How would you know? You would have to do research and that's too hard for Americans. b/c we are LAZY.

i asked myself this same question because i'm around A LOT of really smart people and most of them are Christians.
but of course apparently being a part of an organised religion is seen as a symbol of stability.

They know it would be political suicide, which just goes to show how bass-ackwards this place is. We should be voting for those who have nothing to do with religion.

It's probably the latter, though I would vote for a person, of any faith, if I agreed with their platform.
I too am Atheist.
