I live in a condo with 4 adult cats and a dog and we want to get a Maine Coon, but the cat would be totally indoors, Maine Coons are known as hunters, but other then a few dust bunnies, there isn't anything to hunt in the house. Are they happy as indoor cats?

My Aunt just put her 16 yr.old Maine Coon down as he had sever diabetes. He lived his entire life inside and had access to the outside but did not care to go out.He had plenty of toys to stalk and hunt and a carpeted tree to climb. He was neutered so that may have cut down on his need to "hunt".
My sister-in-law also had a Maine Coon that lived indoors, just a big couch potato. She was spayed .She lived to be 13 years old.
They truly are the most beautiful cat I know of.
Interesting history. If you have not researched it you should.

Do Maine Coon Cats make good indoor pets or do they need to be outdoors as they are natural born hunters?

I have a huge maine coon named Charlie..

We've had him since he was a kitten *rescued* and it was funny because...he just kept getting bigger...and bigger..

Anyways, he weighs up to 19lbs and still has 2 more years to grow...He has been an indoor cat since we got him, and only goes outside when I have him on a harness and leash...and still gets scarred if I'm not nearby him...

Maine coons are very intelligent and independent *but any cat is like that* He doesn't shed bad even with all that long hair..He has other cats to play with, lots of toys, a cat play house thingy, scratching boards and high places to sit/sleep on...He is completley fine and happy, and couldnt be better..

It's actually alot better to have your cats indoors than outdoors these days and they are just as happy and occupied as they would be outside..

Hope this helps!

Maine Coons are very large & active which means they need space & exercise. With some effort you can certainly provide these things to an indoor cat. Luckily, you already have four other cats, so they will assist you greatly in keeping him busy. Make sure he has lots of toys & things to climb on etc.

The Maine Coon cats I have met have been wonderful cats, relaxed, loving and very beautiful too. Like all long haired breeds you will need to groom your cat pretty much daily to keep it's coat in top condition, also consider getting it a food that it designed to help cats deal with hairballs as well as find a hairball remedy that it likes. Other than that read up on the breed and have lots of fun getting to know your new cat! :)

I have a 16 year old female Maine Coon that is an indoor kitty. She is quite content playing with her toys, hiding in boxes (must supply boxes for kitties), she likes perches (i.e. atop her kitty condo) and hunting her 3 year old brother Salem, who is a Norweigian Forest Cat, a hunter himself.

I have a mainecoon called Princess she has never been out side for 20 years only time i have her anywhere outside is in my arms or in a cat carrier. good cat owners will be happy to know they will live a happier and much longer life inside, and it cost a lot l;ess to have them inside. they don't need to go to a vet at all unless they are real sick even for shots.
