SAlEM, was the name of the arab king of jerusalem 5000 years ago,the city was named after him,3eer salem,ibraheem(alahi essalam) passed by 3eer salem,and he was a guet of salem.
the name changed to oor salem,which later on comes the hebrew name 2000 years later oorshalem,
many names was given to the city
yeboos
ileya capitolina
illyaa(was when khalifa Omar visited there)
over 90 names such as Al -zahira,Al-saahira,Al-zahraa,were given to the city
muslims called it then "Beit elmaqdes" which is still used till now shortened to AL Qudss

numbers are to show a letter not in the english alpha bet
but it change nothing of the prounciatioin for you such as
3eer salem is pronounced the same as eer salem and that was main reason to have the english name jerusalem in order to replace the missing letter other wise it will be eersalem or oorsalem instead of jerusalem (3erusalem)
