Doctors use a system called "CHCS" which is a computerized network for placing "orders" into a global system. Once entered, another user, in your case the pharmacist, is able to view what is needed to be dispensed. Whenever the doctor does place the order, there may be delays for another user to view the order, because like stated before, it is a global system.

Whenever my clinic uses it, we usually have a small delay which varies from a few minutes or so.

*On a side note, they sell over the counter sleep aids, which may work as a temporary solution to your absence of sleep. Try taking some Benadryl, that too should give you some drowsiness to help ease you to sleep.

Very few doctor's offices use electronic prescribing. The number is less than 5-10% at this point.
Ambien CR is a waste of money. It doesn't work any better than regular Ambien. It is just a marketing ploy by the manufacturer.
