Enroll in photography classes at your high school or community college. An Associate Degree is acceptable but a 4 year Fine Arts Degree will open more doors. If your schedule doesn't allow classroom instruction or there just aren't any classes available, check into the New York School of Photography (nyip.com). They offer correspondence courses and have been in business since 1910. It is possible to "self-teach" but its much much harder.

While taking classes, find a working professional photographer and become his/her assistant (gofer). Work for free if you have to. Watch and listen as they work and only ask questions if you don't understand your instructions or when your mentor isn't working. Takes notes so you can ask questions about things you don't understand.

Take some business classes. Your mentor will tell you that running a successful photography business (or any business) requires about 60% to 75% of your time doing things like taxes, paying the bills, getting assignments, planning shoots, delivering prints, etc., etc. Its a bit more complicated than just taking pictures and collecting the money.

Good luck!

Decide what type of photographer you want to be. I do weddings and modeling shoots.
Read a book about photography. You need to know and understand the relationship between light and exposure for good pics. Then you'll be able to operate your camera in manual controlling the aperture and shutter speed for your needs in any situtation. Also learn photo shop. It will help. You can get Adobe lightroom for about $100 if you can't afford photoshop.
