"AM modulation" is an incorrect terminology. Presumably, you are referring to AM broadcasting, which is the transmission of information using amplitude modulation. AM broadcasting is distinguished from FM broadcasting, where the data is encoded by frequency modulation instead. What amplitude modulation means is simply that the strength of the signal varies in accordance with the information being sent. In this case, the frequency remains constant.
