Luke 22:36-38
36 Then he said to them: “But now let the one that has a purse take it up, likewise also a food pouch; and let the one having no sword sell his outer garment and buy one. 37 For I tell YOU that this which is written must be accomplished in me, namely, ‘And he was reckoned with lawless ones.’ For that which concerns me is having an accomplishment.” 38 Then they said: “Lord, look! here are two swords.” He said to them: “It is enough.”
Which cheek were they suppose to turn by this command?

OK Rose. The Commander that Arrested Jesus was a Chiliarchos (literaly in charge of a thousand [Greek]) about 1000 (no less that 600) men against 12 peaceful disciples and their teacher. Where was the threat and danger imposed by Jesus and his men? I mean this is a exaggerated use of military assets. I think 20 would have done the job. No one moves 1000 men to capture pacifist. Sounds like prelude to a battle!

Sevensun I love that. “It will never do us any good to read the Word of God through our INTELLECT, because it would not make sense to us for sure.”
God forbid I use my Intellect, who knows what I might come up with.

Faith: “is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the EVIDENT DEMONSTRATION of realities though not beheld.” Hebrews 11:1 “realities though not beheld” dose not necessarily mean supernatural!

Assasination is what they are used for. Everyone talking against Jesus was to be assasinated. They still do it.

a. But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack: Jesus is saying: "I am on the point of leaving you, and when I am gone, you must use common sense means for provision and protection." Such practical considerations were not needed before, but were needed now.

b. The disciples had been sent out to do ministry without Jesus before (Luke 10:1-17), but then they were received with goodwill and hospitality. Now they are facing a hostile world without Jesus, and must be prepared.

c. It is enough means enough of this kind of talk (Jesus’ firm way of ending the conversation), not two swords will be enough. How could two swords ever be enough against all those who came to arrest Jesus?

i. Jesus’ disciples must be "just as determined and whole-hearted as a fighting man who gives up everything, even his garment, as long as he only possesses a sword to continue the struggle with." (Geldenhuys)

49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man's ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?

think this through :-)

It will never do us any good to read the Word of God through our intellect, because it would not make sense to us for sure. In one part of the Gospels, Jesus said to His disciples, "Oh you of little faith, how long do I have to put up with you?" I think that was when they were arguing about, why they couldn't cast the epileptic demon out of a fathers young son (child), and Jesus said it wouldn't come out unless they used prayer and fasting, because of their weak faith etc. It's possible since Jesus had already said, how long do I have to put up with you, that in this scene they (the disciples) were already arguing about who was going to be the greatest in the Kingdom, so maybe Jesus was testing the disciples' spiritual growth and comprehension of kingdom living, by saying "buy swords", and He was disappointed that they were exclaiming "here are two swords". Jesus said, "that is enough"!. Maybe He gave them an option to either do it His way, or do it their own. Because He did remind them that He had said to them to go without a purse and bag etc. but now I say, "if you have a purse take it and a bag, buy a sword even." Just my thoughts.

The only reported occasion when Jesus’ followers had weapons was before receiving the holy spirit at Pentecost. This was on the Mount of Olives. Why did they have weapons here? Because Jesus had told them to! (Luke 22:36-38) Why? So Jesus could demonstrate powerfully that, had he desired to resort to carnal weapons for self-defense, he could have. But he did not! Rather, he reprimanded the one who used his weapon, saying: “All those who take the sword will perish by the sword.” (Matt. 26:51, 52) Thus, among other things, Jesus showed he would not seek protection by means of such deadly weapons. It is as Paul later said: “The weapons of our warfare are not fleshly.” 2 Cor. 10:4.

This principle of not bearing carnal weapons for self-defense really serves as a protection in many instances. How so? Because resorting to deadly weapons to defend persecuted Christians would likely result in far greater hurt than by not using them. If God’s servants were to carry arms, and fire at their assailants when persecuted, it is very likely that the full wrath of the police, or even government troops, would descend upon them. Many more Christians would probably be killed than if they had not carried arms.

He said according to the custom of those days as per the prophecy. Actual spiritual meaning of sword means word of God which has two sharp edges which can enter into the flesh and bones and also enter into the thinking and separate good and evil and also do God's will.

He also said that he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword and to turn the other cheek. Which takes the greater restraint, being peaceful with a sword or being peaceful unarmed?

Verse 38 tells us that Jesus was speaking figuratively. What Jesus meant was future missionaries would be facing swords and martyrdom because of their faith.

It was a good investment. Swords were going to be in demand by the army, so his disciples could make lots of money and jesus could have a big pimp palace and a Cadillac.
