The purpose of the prophets was to "prophecise to the current king. They made predictions on when was a good time to go to war or make political decisions and general near future predictions, really no different than jesus "prophecising" the end times that would come before his apostles all passed.

They however, could have cared less what was to happen hundreds of years in the future. The prophets were there for the monarchy only, that is why once the monarchy ended so did the prophets. If there is no monarchy there is no reason the be prophecising. None of the prophecies that people attribute to jesus, have anything to do with jesus.

nblmint-sure it says that, in the badly translated Greek version, the original Hebrew says young girl not virgin. No this had nothing to do with jesus.

So true. The line that Christians get 'Immanuel' and the virgin birth from is clearly specific to that time. The young woman is already pregnant and the prophecy is that the siege the kingdom is under at that time will end before the child is grown up.

Books like Daniel fit the historical circumstances of the times that they were written. If you know much history, it's obvious that they're about events that have happened, not a distant future.

If you leave the end date for your 'prophecies' deliberately vague, then you can never really be proven wrong.
That way, if something absurd and unpredictable DOES happen, they can say, "See, I TOLD you so!"

It's ridiculous to think anyone back then thought to themselves "Ya know 2000 years from now this is gonna be important." Completely ridiculous.
