Sometimes I imagine God's reaction to the morning news:

"Criminy! First they pray for me to change the course of a hurricane, something I can't do because that would break my own physical laws. Then they pray for me to do a favor for them and their neighbors while withholding my favor from other of their neighbors who attend some other church. What the Heck do they want from me anyway!?"

It is not a matter of right or wrong. If you need rain and you feel it will help to pray then by all means pray. Christians say all prayers are answered by God. So if you are a believer you can pray then you may get rain. But God may say are you nuts? There's not a cloud in the sky. Just another way of answering your prayer. I wish I could help but I'm afraid all prayer is nonsense.

Our Church Congregation prayed for no rain during the construction of our new Church. It did not rain during the whole entire constructions, and it rained during the off days. We prayed for rain after the construction was done, and it rained. Our pastor tonight said, "listen. It's raining isn't it?" God is so kind and good to us.
Now take that into context though. Listen to this message to get the gist of it. http://www.mypodcast.com/fsaudio/upp_20070813_2052-64182.mp3

And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.” 1 Kings 17:1
And it came to pass after many days that the word of the LORD came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.” 1 Kings 18:1
James 5:16-18
16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

Elijah did, and God answered his prayer: James 5
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

What's the point? If your god is omniscient, it knows you have a drought, it doesn't need you to tell it. Perhaps you have a capricious god, one that waits until sufficient prayers are in the bank before allowing a shower or two. If your god can make it rain, it was your god that stopped it raining in the first place. Perhaps your god fancied to punish you a bit with a drought - and we're back to a capricious god.

Those who pray for rain have a very poor opinion of their god.

If it is a Christian doing the praying, then surely, they are questioning their god's choice NOT to make it rain.
