cats can mate with other cats, dogs with other dogs. No mating between a cat and a dog.

cats can mate with cats and dogs with dogs. They will not mate with each other because they don't recognise each other as the same species. One of the definitions of a species is that they will mate with each other. If you were to take sperm from one and eggs from another and combine them in a test tube, it still will not produce a live product, they are sufficiently different that there would be too many genetic defects to produce live offspring.

Even if they did, they would not be able to produce offspring due to the large number of defects that would occur. An embryo may form but would spontaneously abort during the pregnancy. So....no they would not be able to survive. If they were different animals with in the same species ..like a lion and tiger you could get a "Liger" which science has done, but animals like dogs and cats from different species are unable to reproduce together. It is not in nature. Who knows if they will be able to do it in a lab in the future...but why would they want to?

Normally, cats and dogs cannot mate and have offspring. However, this could conceivably happen through genetic manipulation of their DNA.

Sure they can mate, they just can not produce offspring together. Don't you know a dog will hump anything?

Not with each other. Come on! The genetics are nowhere near close enough to mix! Think, will you?
