Did he believe that universe has a begining or not?

That he doesn't exist.

He may have been wrong about steady state universe (indeed he was, though he was able to accept that Big Bang Cosmology provided a better explanation although he did keep trying to revive a quasi-steady state theory that could explain what the original couldn't but Big Bang could) but he was right about the triple alpha process.

I suspect he was right about god as well (he did correctly note that theists preferred Big Bang cosmology because it created a gap for their god to fill, at least until we explain it).
