it was probably a lot like ''mikvah,'' a ritualistic sprinkling of water practiced by the essenes of qumran, an extremely rigid group of jewish ascetics, which symbolized the washing away of sins. the essenes most likely had a big impact on the ministries of both john and Jesus. click this link if you want to read about it. it's an interesting read.

John' baptism was a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins:
Mark 1:4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for remission of sins
A Christian's baptism is a baptism in Christ:
Rom 6:3-5 Or do you not know that as many of us were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? There we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also be in the likeness of His resurrection

John's baptism was watre baptism. It has been replaced with baptism by the Holy Spirit.
Act 19:1 ¶ And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
Act 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
Act 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
Act 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
Act 19:5 When they heard [this], they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid [his] hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Act 19:7 And all the men were about twelve.

Short answer: No, but he did it for the same reason.
Baptism is a Jewish practice going back at least 3500 years. Of course, they didn't call it "baptism" and they still don't. They call it "taking a mikvah." It's a ceremonial cleansing to mark a transition between stages of life. A woman takes a mikvah once a month. A person might take a mikvah when he gets married or divorced or survives a harrowing event. Jesus took a mikvah when he began his public ministry. Repentance from sin was John's major theme, but it wasn't the only purpose for which he performed mikvahs. Christians also baptize to publicly mark their repentance from sin and entrance into the Kingdom of God. -yk
