Hi. I am just wondering. If I am visiting someone at a hotel and I know their room number, should I tell the reception that I am here to visit rom506. Or can I just go to the room without checking with the reception?

I have worked in a hotel for 21 years and you can just go to the room. Everyone else does.

But if your at an upper class resort it's better to checkin.

Tell the reception. Watch the movie "pretty woman", in which the hotel manager tells Richard Gere that he'd prefer to know if he has visitors. The action takes place in a luxury hotel, though (and maybe that's because the girl sleeps in the room).

You should say if you're expected or not. If you're not, the reception may call the room to ask the person if he agrees to see you or not. They may call anyway just to check you're really a friend/relative and not an annoying person.

You may even be requested to sign something.

At least, I'd do that, especially if the hotel if an upscale one.

Moreover, some hotels have secured elevators that have to be activated with the electronic key of the room. I suppose that is to prevent non-guest for going upstairs (even though stairways are not protected).

There is no requirement that you check in at the reception desk before going to visit your friend.

most times you can just walk to the elevator and go up to the rooms....act like you have a room there....if they question you then, you tell them the person your visiting.....good luck

If you know for sure she has checked in it is okay to just take the elevator and go up to her floor, knock on the door and your in.
