At work if anything was being offered to you free, trust me you would know about it! Management always glorifies whatever perks they offer. In all likely hood this belongs to some one! It maybe just a gag, beware!!!

Each workplace has a different set of rules regarding this. Some places simply expect everyone to be on the "honor system" and other places do assume that any food or drink left in a common area is "fair game" for all. If you're not certain of the "rules" at your workplace, then find someone who's been with the company for a while and ask. You don't have to look like you're begging if you phrase it correctly. You can say, "At my previous workplace, food in the common areas was left to be shared, is that the same here?" or, "I was thinking of bringing donuts to share with the office one morning. If I leave them in the common area, will people feel free to take them, or should I leave a better indication?" - use the second only if you DO intend to bring something at a later date to be shared with others.

If you didn't spend the money on it, it's not yours. You don't go to Walmart and assume everything there is for the taking, just because it's not behind glass, right?

Besides, what kind of behavoir have you or your co-workers been exhibiting that you would think someone is trying to set a "trap" Have you run off with someone else's food or drink before and then claimed you didn't know because they didn't have their name on it? Do you assume it is no longer your responsibility to feed yourself at work and that someone "owes" it to you to be your personal supplier of food?

On a practical note of caution....my Mom "trapped" lots of food stealers at work in her day. She got them with everything from highly salted bottled water (when bottled water was rare and expensive) to chocolate bars that were really Ex-Lax with the words melted off the pieces of chocolate.

Err on the side of caution. Bring your own food, snacks and pop. Lock it up, especially if you've made "mistakes" in the past and have eaten someone else's food. They might go beyond "traps" and be looking for revenge. It's amazing what range of nasty tastes can be invisibly smeared around the rim of a pop can. (ask my Mom)

I have left lollies and chocolate out for everyone to share at work.

I think help yourself, if it's a treat left open in the middle of a table.

If the snack is sealed or something other than chips, lollies or chocolate, I would leave it alone - it's probably someone's afternoon tea they have forgotten to put away!

If it was your food, how would you want others to behave?
Do to others as you would have done to you.

Want to feel really good? Bring a bunch of food and label it "Enjoy! ~ from _(you)__". Then you can sleep well at night, and you may start a trend of kindness.

Good karma comes 'round like bad karma.

And if you ate something you weren't supposed to eat-
you can heal that wound with an apology for someone to forgive you and move on. Then you can gift and

... spread the good karma.

Don't eat it even if it is free if you have some sense of decency you'd leave it there, I mean are you meant to carry a thing of popcorn around with you? Who honestly bothers to label packets of chips or treats? It's common courtesy not to act like a ravenous dog.

Did you bring any food or pop to work? If the answer is no then leave it alone. Someone's lunch or snack shouldn't have to be "secured" from freeloaders. Got it?
