Except in very rare cases: Mental instability or mental defect was the only way to save yourself from the hallows or whatever the capital punishment of the day happened to be.
Atheists, Jews, Pagans, etc didn't stand a chance, so we met in secret and kept our beliefs.

Even if you were a believer, & your face didn't fit, the powers to be would organize it so that you were tortured until you confessed to being a non-believer.

Then they would zap you by some gory means!

for some sad reason, no is not in some people's brain processing. i hate that. i did not know about the non belief. if everyone thought the exact same way as every one, believed in the same things ate the same things (etc) can you imagine how boring and bland the world would be??? i have friends that are wiccan ( i hope i spelled that right), hindu, catholicc, baptist and various other religions. we are all equal and so is the right to have our own belief.
