I'm assuming from this question, that you are someone who has tried and has difficulty memorizing scripture?

Some have different methods. If you would like a surefire method for memorizing scripture, please, take it from a pianist who learned wonderful memorization techniques from her teacher.

1) Start with the last word. Yes. The last word. This seems counter-intuitive, but it will be like giving your brain a map whose destination is already known, instead of setting out on a journey with a map with you, but no clear knowledge of how to get there past a certain point. Repeat this last word, several times, with focus and attention. When you are bored of that. Repeat it some more.

2) When you're done with that, add on the next word, and say both of them. Repeat them until you are bored, and then some more with focus and attention.

3) Continue adding on words in this fashion until you have the whole thing. The memorization work is front loaded, so it is alot at the beginning that seems dull and repetitious, but once you have it, as long as you refresh it a little each day, you've got it.

4) After you've practiced memorizing with this method you will begin to learn that you don't have to take every word singly from the end, you'll find that you can take a short phrase from the end, and work in short phrases. But until you have familiarity with how this method really works for you, start singly, as dull as it may seem.

If its a longer passage, before you begin the above method, make out an easy to understand conceptual map. So you might, if the first concept is trust, write trust at the top of the page with an arrow leading down to the next concept, faith...for example, or whatever pictorial method works best for you. Memorize this first, and then you will have your internal map to be able to place your work of the above style to fit into.

the holy spirit given to people when they believe that Jesus is lord is what allows you to remember what verses and where they are. Somebody compared to music lyrics. Think of your favorite book do you remember what page and paragraph a particular sentance is? Many true devoted Christians can tell you where things are, all this comes from the power of the holy spirit. Some are more gifted then others becuase they have the gift of knowledge.

The same way you remember song lyrics or things for a test...repetition, studying, and applying it to your life. Also, there have been many hymns and other songs that are from scripture, I know those always help me remember verses and such.

I remember the concepts and certain words... then have to rely on computer search programs to find the actual verses. I couldn't find a fraction of what I need to find without the search programs.

I guess it depends on the person. Usually it comes from reading it. Then when the right time comes, the verse is already in my head.

I spend time in it. And a lot of the time I am not reading it, I'm telling people about it. The Holy Spirit gives me more of what I have as far as knowledge in it.

And sometimes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I sleep with it.

repetition. First you memorize a single phrase. Then a sentence, then a passage.
