My dad still works at a minimum wage job, but gets excellent benefits and social security. I do have a job myself but I find it hard to support me, my wife and children along with my parents. My dad is 75 and he says that he might not have enough money to live if he retires. I always insisted that he retire and I can help him out. As a child, you always want to return something to your parents. He claims that he wants to retire and does not work anymore. He feel that we would not have enough to survive. I feel kind of guilty that he is still working at 75 years old. Please help me cope with this feeling. Do you know anyone that works at 75 yrs old?

He should be getting the maximum Social Security payment at age 75. If he is getting money for a little job on top of that, then swell.

He should not expect you to support him when he quits working. He should have been putting money into some kind of savings plan throughout his whole working life. Quite frankly, he should have been planning all along.

I think that he may need to look at reconfiguring his lifestyle a bit. If his basic living expenses are higher than he can support on his pension, where can he cut back? Is the house payment too much... can he move to a cheaper place? Is there some kind of assistance available? See what all is available.

What about getting everyone together into the same house? A lot of families do very well with parents and their kids' families living together. A wealth of information can be shared. The adult children will have live-in daycare for the little ones. The elderly parents have help when they need it. Utilities won't be that different. Food just a bit more.

I don't know what country you are in, however, in Aust, he can get a pension and still work a little to earn a little extra cash. I personally believe that people should work for as long as they feel comfortable and able. Some times men stop working and their lives change. They suddenly become so much older, so much quicker. I understand that you want to give back to your parents, however, if you aren't really in a financial position to do this, then the answer is not as simple as you would hope. A lot depends on the assets that your father has and any superannuation he may have. Perhaps if you talk I to a financial adviser. If you are in Aust, contact Department of community services and I believe there a financial consultants available there. Good Luck.

i have known may people who work over 75. some older people do it just to keep busy.

every person wants to retire. but if you don't have a really good plan from like birth (j/k) it can be hard. help your dad as much as you can but he is an adult and should have planned better. if you strain yourself financially the same situation is going to be happening with you and your children.

In his mind, working is keeping him alive. there are many who
dye within five years after retirement, because they have no
hobby's to keep them acive. and it's the "inactive life style"
that is harmful.
At his age, he feels proud to still be "productive" and that his
opinions are still valued, and not put out to pasture.
I retired from my job fifteen years age. Because I had the time
required to retire, then I went into another job, for the change
in carreer. When my body physically tells me I need to retire.
I will gladly train someone younger to take my place.
so if he is happy. Let him stay happy. <}:-})

Yes i know of someone who still works , when they get older, my dad he is 86 and still works, owns his own buisness still, and he thinks the same as your dad, cant live when they retire, but i think that is crap, plenty of older people still live when they retire, i think they are just so stubborn lol but you cant do much about it, the dr always told my father the reason hes not dead yet is because he still works and keeps him self younger, while they are working, it occupies their mind and they must love it, just let him be, he will be ok...

Yes, it is pretty common, and a lot of people (in reality) don't know how they will make ends meet to retire.

Well, I hope your Daddy retires soon.
