Rent a steam cleaner. Use regular carpet cleaner and mix it with a pet odor eliminator for carpets. Follow the directions on the container. You can get this at the pet supply store for about 10 or 20 bucks. I've tried many of them, and the only one that works is PetZyme. It comes in a white jug with blue or green lettering. This stuff saved me from having to replace my carpet after one of my dogs got gastritis and pooped and vomited everywhere. I bought the PetZyme at Petco.

Also, whatever you do, don't use the Nature's Made or Nature Whatever in the white container with red lettering because it doesn't work and it makes your carpet smell worse than the poop. I can't understand why it's still on the shelves because it's such a lousy product.

Open the windows. Cover the spots with rags soaked in vinegar. Vacuum up tomorrow. Spray some air freshener too. After the spots have dried cover with baking soda and vacuum up.

Put it outside with shelter until you can get it to the vet. They have special items at the pet store to remove the smell. Open the windows.
