I weigh 183. Would sumo go that light?

There are no weight classes in Sumo. Sumo, though not big outside of Japan has become more popular. There are U.S. and international Sumo organizations now. There is even a Romanian pro Sumo wrestler in Japan, not skinny but more muscular than traditional.
I am an American white boy who loves to watch Sumo. ESPN used to carry the Emperors Cup from Japan but hasn't had any this year.
Contrary to the uninformed opinions, Sumo is not just a bunch of fat guys in diapers. These guys are highly trained athletes. It is really amazing when you think about a 400lb man who can move as deliberately as they do.

Hi there
I think you should opt for another style. There are various other wrestling and grappling arts to choose from. The worlds your oyster so to speak.
The only other option is to go on the Mc Donald's diet for the next six months but i don't think that would be too good for your health. Very tasty though. ;-)
The other major problem you would have is that even if you were the correct weight finding a sumo school outside Japan is just about impossible.
But there's lots of other stuff to try that you would benefit from.
Best wishes

they have guys training all sizes in Japan, not sure about anywhere else.
You could try greco wrestling if you wanted. They only use upper body like sumo and with the new pushout rule approved by FILA you can use sumo tactics if you like them that much to get points pushing people out(before you did not get points for pushing the other guy out of the circle).
We can teach all of that to people no probs.

Yes. sumo is for all sizes. they even have it down to people to weigh 100lbsers. The big names in sumo are the huge guys because they can dominate the lighter guys. they don't have weight classes though. Its who you can or can not beat. good luck with your search

yes sumo like all wrestling has weight classes. and sixtus misunderstood the greco rule. you can get points if the other person backs off of the mat, however if you push them off, and its not in the course of trying to throw or turn them you get penalized, if you are trying to throw or turn them there are no extra points awarded
