I have found it is best to be polite. I used to be nasty about it, but I got some mad and they kept calling ( lol ). I have since seen the error of my ways and I just politely tell them that no one by that name lives here or you have the wrong number. They usually say they are sorry and I say no problem.

Why be nasty when someone makes an honest mistake? Be a good person.........tell them "sorry, you've got the wrong number" in a polite way, then hang up politely.

I politely tell the caller you have the wrong number or no one live here by that name. Anyone can dial a wrong number by mistake.

I receive a few calls like this a week.
It is rude and unjustified to be nasty to someone simply for dialing incorrectly. It is a harmless, unintentional mistake.
e.g.
I get a call from someone asking for "Carl". I respond by saying (in a friendly tone of voice)"What number did you dial?" If they dialed my number, I say "You dialed correctly, but there is no Carl here." If the dialed incorrectly I tell them what number they actually dialed.
I always get an apology, to which I respond "No trouble! Have a good day/eve."

just politely tell them they have the wrong number, and do not give them the number they did reach. Treat the caller the same way YOU would want to be treated if you accidentally dialed a wrong number...it happens to all of us sooner or later.

Since I am good at mimicry,I bark like a dog first and then roar like a Lion and use all the nasty words in the dictionaries of all languages in the world and condemn him.I will, pretend as if I am the Director of a company and abuse him.
Note:Whatever I have mentioned is not true and is told in a lighter vein.I am always polite.

If I'm in a good mood and have the time I sometimes have quite a conversation.
If they seem snotty about it I just tell them to call back. And then hang up.
Usually I'm just reasonable polite. Short and too the point. Most people are really cool about it.

I'm usually polite. But I am never happy when somebody calls my house - I say "hello" - and they say "Who is this?" You call my house - you identify yourself. The end.
If it's a wrong number - saying "Oh sorry I have a wrong number" is fine.

I am very polite as a rule. "I am sorry dear you seem to have dialled a wrong number!" I have had guys telling me. "Well, I guess that's destiny maybe it's you I want to talk to actually!" I like. " Ha! Ha! Ha! Some other time Romeo!!!"
