My brother-in-law was diagnosed with an aneurysm about a year ago. it was (4?) centimeters(or something like that). They said if it got to (5), he was in danger and would need surgery. It is now at 5 and they are saying he needs vascular surgery. He goes to physicians. I just want some info about what this all entails and means?
I understand it means if it ruptures, he could die. He is a wonderful man and I would hate to see anything but good happen to him.

Depending on the location and extent of the aneurysm, they will either do an endovascular stent, or have to do surgery to repair it.
If at all possible, they will do the endovascular route. This is when they put a wire through the artery in your leg, and feed it to the location of the aneurysm. They slide a stent up the wire that acts as a sheath to keep the aneurysm from rupturing. This means they won't have to cut through his stomach, which is what most people prefer. The recovery time for this is much shorter than regular surgery.
However, there are a few things that could prevent them from doing an endovascular stent, like location. If this is the case, it will be more like typical surgery, with them cutting through his stomach. Either way, you get about the same result.
Hopefully that helps. I can be more specific if you need. But you will get better answers from his physicians since they know his situation, so make sure to ask them about the procedure.
Best of luck to your brother.

The definitive treatment for an abdominal aortic aneurysm exceeding 5.5 cms in diameter is surgical repair of the aorta. This typically involves opening up of the dilated portion of the aorta and insertion of a synthetic patch tube.
Surgery is safe.
Rupture is almost always fatal and should be prevented.
