Actually, yes they DO sing. Someone placed in my care a "male" canary they no longer wanted because it wouldn't sing. However, it sang all day long for me. Then it started laying eggs. I don't think this is something a male canary can do, and in fact it's not the first time I'd heard a female sing, but it's definitely the most I've heard one. It's not nearly as likely as having a male sing, but it does happen.

My female canary, Lucee, used to be Luigi! When we bought her, she sang so much that the store assumed she was a boy. However, when she laid an egg, we knew she was Lucee.
Female birds do sing however it is not the same as the males' singing. it is hard to describe the difference if you haven't heard a male canary but males' singing is longer and much more melodious than females...almost like a rolling sound.
Lucee sings constantly and beautifully and I love her just the same. Depending on how old Mindy is, she may begin building a nest and/or laying eggs (they do this even if they are single) which will be your sure sign that she is female.
The only true way to tell is a DNA test that you can order out of bird mags or online...you do have to pay for them and take a sample of your birds' blood...a little too traumatic if you ask me. Why not wait and see if she lays an egg? You don't have to change her name. We had Gerard, the "male" lovebird and when "he" laid an egg, we just kept the old name.

The "male" canary I've had for a year and has sung beautifully the entire time, laid three eggs this month. So female canaries can sing.

No, they do not. If you have a male, you have to make him want to sing, and that's usually done by playing recordings of other singing canaries.

No they don't sing they just chirp BUT lots of people pretend their pets are a different gender no one will know it would be just your little secret. I mean how many people would want to check!
Anyway i hope you and Mindy/Max are happy together.
