As gunpowder was first invented in China the weapons, rockets first, and later firearms were developed there.

As with all nations who used to experiment with early firearms there were multiple accidents causing death and injury to the users, caused by the privative making / construction methods, metals in gun barrels and breeches being to weak to contain the pressure of the igniting powder.

There was no one specific inventor of the fire arm (unless it was that Chinese chap whose name has been lost in the mists of time!) in Europe and the USA weapons development followed a progressive learning curve with many inventors adding their knowledge to the collective knowledge of many others, the same can be said if weapons development today, its always evolving.

The invention of gunpowder (a mixture of charcoal, saltpetre and sulfur) by the Chinese during the 1st Century AD also led to the first examples of firearms, mainly fire lances shot from cast iron "cannons" in the 1100s; the earliest surviving example was cast in bronze and dates to the 1200s, during the Song Dynasty.
