ok. so i know that deer hunting season is coming, so therefore insurance companies are gearing up for insruance claims for deer/car accidents. so let's just say, if we can hunt them, which is better eradicating as much deer and leaving them for dead or the buzzards meals, or let them cause thousands of dollars for repairs? in my opinoin, i'd rather eradicate as much deer to resolve the accident issue. other opinions?

Despite most people's perception that the deer population is under threat, their numbers have actually been BURGEONING due to humans driving out natural predators while protecting the deer.

The national deer population has exploded from half a million to 25 million in the past century. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6835501/

We're even working on birth control for deer: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ws/nwrc/research/reproductive_control/gonacon1rev.pdf

The deer overpopulation is damaging the habitat of birds and harming the bird popultion. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa003&articleID=00047FF0-8A73-1365-897683414B7F4945

I think deer are "pretty" too, but there are just too many of them. City dwellers might not have to personally deal with the impact, but we on the rural fringes have our landscapes and gardens damaged by those "pretty" deer. I've been a passenger in a deer collision. The deer bounded up a steep incline to the highway, invisible to those in our car, though people several cars behind could see what was going on and avoid hitting us. It was terrifying.

In my state of Nebraska we have 3,488 collisions with animals (mostly deer) a year; drivers in the neighboring state of Iowa have 8,600 collisions a year. Drivers are trained "Don't veer for deer," because attempting to swerve often leads to a more serious accident. (Source: Omaha World Herald, Oct 9, 2007).

I would personally prefer to see far greater population controls put in place. I don't think that I want my tax dollars going to deer birth control, either. I'm more in favor of increasing numbers of hunting permits, lowering permit price, and controlled culls where the meat is processed and donated to a food bank.

There are a good amount of times when people hit deer and can't do a thing about it but through my experience in the country there are tell tale signs to look for when driving down the road, first of all, most the time you'll be able to see their eyes glow up or you'll see a deer run across in the distance. The key thing to remember is that if there's one deer, there will be more so watch out and slow down before you reach the area. That alone will save you a ton of accidents talking from experience. Knowing where they cross is a good thing too. Wood lines that open up to fields and fields in general. They walk ridges and wood lines so that's where you'll see a lot of them. Deer are vital for my and others source of food so birth control for these species is ridiculous and senseless for the 6 or less years they stay alive.

Geeeezz.... It's not about eradication..It's about population control and reducing the herd numbers to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. No true Hunter kills a Deer then "Leaves them for dead or the buzzards meals"........ Where the heck did you get that "Fairy Tale" from? If you believe that dribble all I can say is I feel sorry for you. You are grossly mis-informed.........And obviously know nothing about the subject matter you are asking about here. I can't wait to see the responses you get to this question.......

You sound like a walking advertisement for the Car Insurance Industry. They aren't "gearing up" for anything, let alone hunting season.....

does the Pennsylvania game commission pay your salary?
or the insurance company lobbyists? hunting is about preservation and population control so that future generations will have the opportunity to hunt as well as see these beautiful creatures, car/deer collisions is about the uncontrolled expansion of humans further into wildlife habitat causing more conflicts and accidents.PA has more deer/car collisions than any other state year after year. In some parts of the state it seems that deer have been eradicated, do to poor management practices by the game commission possibly be pressured by the insurance and timber companies as well as the DCNR.

hey you dont have to leave the ones that are hit with a car, i have hit a few and kept them still lots of high quality meat. i know several poor families also that the dept of conservation calls to come and pick up deer that were just hit, some of these people eat almost nothing but deer.i dont care if the deer is shot or hit with a car the meat should not be wasted when some people are hungry

as far as the hunting side of this question goes. it is not about eradication of deer. It is population control even with hunting in my state deer numbers are soaring, so they opend most counties up 4 years ago to unlimited doe tags and population is still on the rise

I have an idea. Instead of driving your car through the deer's habitat, why not just destroy all of it. Most people eat cows and chickens anyway. Heck, turn that forest into a "business park" surrounded by tons of parking. That way we will not have to deal with deer anymore.

I seriously wonder why some people even open their mouths. You are one of those people. If anyone hunts deer and then leaves it to rot, I want to know about it. That is sick, wrong, immoral and in every state I know of, illegal. I know a plethora of deer hunters and I have never met one who killed a deer and left it to rot.

Hunters, like myself, must hunt deer to control their population because we humans, who think some animals are cute and cuddly, have nearly eradicated all of the deers natural predators because they are "scary," and we cannot stand the idea of living in their territory.

This is not about you or your car. It is about Earth, on which you visit for 80 or 90 years. You make me sick.

Thousands of dollars? If an idiot driver hit you and it cost that much money, would you kill every idiot driver and leave them out for the buzzards? And also, the bright idea of giving out permits to anyone who happens to walk by, there would be more accidents involving uneducated hunters and guns! Hunting is not the easy way out for population control.

Overall a slug is much more efficient at harvesting Deer than Buckshot. Buckshot, even magnum loads have greatly restricted ranges vs a slug that can be effective out to 100 yards or more depending on the gun, type, gauge, and style of slug you are shooting. Without question or reservation I recommend you use a slug that will provide you the most accuracy out of your specific shotgun.

This problem started back in 1492, and has become worse as the years go on, What gives any man the right to kill, just to kill?.......To eradicate a speicies is in its self ignorant, for the fact that everything is here on earth and has its own ballance...Not 4 man to try to play GOD.....If MAN would stop building on land that they have no need to build on, they wouldn't have these problems, but the greed and egos of man have destroyed about as much as it can........Soon they will be destroying each other........

Your not very bright are you?

We eradicated all the deer about 100 years ago, it took decades to bring them back. Your thinking is lacking in the big picture.
