Depends on the type of blues you like. Start with Robert Johnson (you can get a collection from any major retailer -- got mine from Wal-Mart, but amazon.com also has it). My personal favorites are BB King, John Lee Hooker and Hound Dog Taylor. Believe it or not, I've learned a lot about the blues from listening to George Thorogood. He always covers several blues numbers on his albums/CDs (some of his best stuff is not the popular songs).

If you find that there is a blues artist that you like, I suggest you find out who their influences were. That is what I did and it opened my world to the blues. Everyone here has given great suggestions. I also like Anthony Gomes (blue/funk/gospel/rock), Koko Taylor, Pinetop Perkins, Albert King and Etta Baker.

One of my favorite cds is Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughn In Session. It is basically the two of them jamming together and talking about music. I could listen to that cd everyday. I would also recommend checking out the cd/dvd documentary 10 Days Out from Kenny Wayne Shepherd. He spent 10 days traveling to play and speak with some of the genres legends.
