I think animals do not have the capacity to understand much beyond food, sleep, play, etc... Perhaps her seemingly worship of her owner is just a instinct to protect? However, who knows whether a supreme deity uses animals to communicate with us? Maybe it's possible that animals are in our lives for very specific reasons. I love those shows on TV about animals rescuing their owners. :)

Perhaps the most Outstanding Question I've ever seen at YA! I've kept a lot of cats over the years, and it's easy to admire their high I.Q. and open emotions. They're like little furry humans without the ability to speak nor opposable thumbs. The closest I can come to answering your insightful query is: Two young male brother cats were inseperable. They did everything together. While one slept, the other slipped out the front door one morning and, before I could shoo him back in the house, he was killed by a neighbor's dog. His brother saw nothing from indoors asleep. I quickly buried the one in the back yard with the help of the neighbor, who was very sorry. Upon returning indoors, the surviving brother was awake and alarmed. He roamed around the house looking for his missing brother, mewing piteously as if mourning. The two had only been separated for maybe 30 minutes, but it seemed he knew something had taken his brother away. Very eerie and poignant. What was going through his little mind? True story, about 1980.

Animals can also be conditioned to do amazing acts. All just in the promise of a treat or extra love. This is not to dismiss the presence of a deity only to express that all creatures will act the same for a hope of reward.

Animals were not created to KNOW God. They can sense His presence just as humans should. People were created to KNOW God and His presence. Animals were given instincts such as taking care of their young. Without a personal relationship with God people are depraved creatures. That is why we have terrorists and school shootings and abortion and rape and all sorts of brutality and oppression. When God is sought then justice and peace and love appear. That is an order higher than the animals.

well...
they (like children) have been more keen to sense the presence of spirits
although animals are highly in tune with nature, the only thought of death, living or anything comes from an instinct to survive
if a rabbit is getting chased by a lynx, the rabbits instinct is to survive, so it runs
other animals like salmon, and ocean lice know that to give birth they have to give their own lives
but again, its instinct

No, but they can be influenced by the Holy Spirit. The Bible says during the millenium the wolf shall lie down with the lamb, and the child shall play with the asp. The prophet gone mad Balaam was rebuked by his dumb @$$.
