The ever-increasing militarization of civilian police departments is becoming more and more like the "standing army" in peacetime that our forefathers abhored.
We should go back to prevention instead of assault teams, and public volunteers instead of seat belt checkers.

Dog lLover- No offense to you! It's the PEOPLE who have let the nation degrade this far. You guys have all my respect and then some. If we all held up our end, you could WALK a beat, alone, knowing we were there to assist.

Here is the deal........

Times have dramatically chanced since the founding fathers penned the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Never once did the envision assault rifles, gang violence, drugs, turf wars, hostages, 12 year old girls held in the trunks of cars duck taped for later violation and murder and so on.

I have a lot I could say on these topics............ but I won't.

Just know there is so much more evil going on in the world than you can ever imagine! And us cops are doing all we can legally to prevent and stop it.

*EDIT

No offense taken. I value everyones valid questions and I answer them with my heart and brain!

Unfortunately here in the UK we are still mostly what you describe as "Peace Officers". Certain elements of society need dealing with much more robustly than your average person. I long for the day when people will wake up and discover the softly softly liberal approach just cannot work with some people. I encounter people on an almost daily basis who have no respect for anything other than their own needs and wants. As long as the State is going to fund this (and their extra curricular criminal activities) they will not change. They have no desire too. They are literally an underclass who have no position and want no position in siciety but are willing to milk it as much as they can.
They need enforcement.

The police force and law enforcement is changing in response to the changes in society. Criminals are more dangerous and heavily armed than ever before. If law enforcement is becoming more military it's because that is what has to be done to protect people.

I don't think our fore fathers envisioned AK-47's when they came up with the right to bare arms. Gotta remember - arms in those days were guns you loaded with powder and a musket ball.

If law enforcement can successfully apply and use military like techniques to keep me safe - I'm all for it.
