Love the new avatar, you beautiful soul!

Heathenry has many, many fundies---from Edda Thumpers to Fundytru to Lore Whores to Redneckatru to Old Norse Snobs to Neandertru. :-)

They all believe there is only ONE way to be heathen: *their* way. And will spend countless hours (or endless webpages) telling you why.

Freyr's kickstand, I'm Recon enough that some out there probably consider ME one!

Our standing joke about ourselves (aside from "religion with homework" or "other white religion") is that all our arguments about heathenry boil down to two unchangeable precepts:

1. You're not the boss of me.
2. You're not doing that right.

i can't say i've ever met one, but i have seen some come close to it online.
i think they would look a lot like our other fundie friends.
they would be the ones that would say that a pagan only believes in a god and goddess; no pagans believe that they are merely archetypes. they would be the ones that say that everyone is going to the summerland and they know for sure that they are going there.
they would be the ones that accuse others of being fluffy because they don't believe what they do or have the knowledge that they do. they would be the ones who would try to define what a "real" pagan is. they would be the ones that judge how a person got their start down this path. they would be the ones that would decry someone eating meat. they would be the ones who refuse to answer questions, but tell someone to go google it.

Yeah they are really really funny.

The only fundie pagans I have ever met, I have met on chat clients, and they are strikingly similar.

They are all self described wiccans, yet they flatly deny that wicca was only "synthesized" for want of a better word in the 1950s.

They almost invariably think that they have access to all the "higher powers" and look down on everyone from a great height.

They are impervious to reason and humour of any type.

They get really REALLY offended when you suggest they got their "religion" and they will describe it as a religion, from watching the craft.

They will tell you of all the amazing rituals they can do, but when you ask what the rituals are, they clam up and invoke secrecy.

They frown on other types of Pagans as being misguided.

You know...fundies seem to have more in common with each other than more moderate believers and practitioners regardless of what those beliefs are, don't you think?

Fundie pagan = One who is convinced that their interpretation of religion is the best. Contrary to what one might think, the people who have the most to fear from fundie pagans are--other pagans.

You're not in danger of being smudged by surprise, or having a BOS beaten at you. Rather, beware of those who believe that their intrepretation of a particular practice, belief, or even word is most correct, and that those who disagree aren't doing it right. They're also the ones who make wide, sweeping assumptions about others based solely on their preconceived notions of what others believe; for example, the extremely Type-A sorts of folks who thing that all eclectics are fluffs, that all goth pagans are black-dyed fluffs, and that all teenaged pagans are just in it for the fad.

A pagan fundie would be of a type that was convinced that not only was their religions the only right one, but that their interpretation is the only right one as well. The wold behave ins such a manner that showed that they believed that becasue the legal system is not based on thier religious beliefs they are not bound by it. Their entire philosophy would be based in the idea that if it isn't part of their religion, it is meaningless. They would constantly be trying to convince everyone around them of the sense of their religious views and take every opportunity to try to convert everyone as well as denegrate every OTHER religion for being...well...not them.

AS for if I have ever met one...well....lets just say yes and leave it at that for now.

Wow.Odd idea.

Well I suppose a fundie Celtic Pagan (my path)would be convinced that everyone who didn't follow our path was wrong and evil and must be made to convert and maybe try to use magic to hurt those who wouldn't.

Gods the idea of someone like that is creepy.I'm sure they are out there though.

Oh yes, they very much exist. Just not in the same sense that Christian fundie's do. They don't force thier belief on people because that isn't quite how the religion works but they do have a "holier then thou" attitude. *shrugs* It takes all kinds. Only Pagans generally "see" this though. We keep things in the community.

Definitely have met them. I would generalize them as having a holier-than-thou attitude, people who go out of their way to tell you why their religion is better than anyone elses. Frequently this is based on (often erroneous) history: my religion is older than yours, my religion is the basis of yours, you just stole my religion and put a new name on it, your Pagan path isn't a real Pagan path, etc.

I'm wary of anyone who bears a "My Goddess beat up your God" bumper sticker.

Anyone who believes that people aren't "real Pagans" unless they act like the speaker definitely falls into this category. This manifests in such claims as "real Pagans don't critisize other Pagans," "real Pagans only cast white magic," "real Pagans never cause harm," "real Pagans follow the Pagan Rede," (yes, I know there's no such thing as a Pagan Rede, but I've heard the claim many times) "real Pagans believe in X and disbelieve in Y."

By the way, just as an aside, Silver Ravenwolf published a whole list of what "real witches" do and don't do in "Teen Witch." There's a great rundown of the claims here: http://www.fortunecity.com/roswell/vanthal/608/id57.htm#
I'm just saying.

a Fundie Pagan would be exactly like a person with a split personality who was constantly arguing with himself. It reminds me of this silly limerick which I have shared before but, with your indulgence, will share again:

A gay man who came from Khartoum
had a lesbian up to his room.
They argued all night,
had a terrible fight,
Over who would do what, and to whom.

same problem with Fundie Pagan person, but all in one body, the poor unfortunate soul!

Yes I have met Pagan fundementalists and Heathen fundementalists (Fundie-truars, as I like to call them). They're just as irritating as Abrahamic fundementalists, and even more infuriating since that sort of thing is supposed to be anathema to most Pagan/Heathen spiritualities.
