Heres my situation, hoping you can give me some input and thoughts.....

I went to community college for 2 years and got max hours I can transfer to a 4 yr university. The drive to my new college will be about 45 minutes. I am thinking about getting an apartment closer to campus. Only problem is I just bought a new car and am paying 300 a month so I would probably have to take out extra money on my student loans to pay for the apartment (about 300 month after splitting cost with buddy).

UMSL has cheap tuition, about 4k a semester and I need about <2 years to finish my degree.

Stay at home and set some money aside or take out extra loans and be free?

The best option is not to take out extra student loans. The commute is not all that bad. The less debt you have after college is the better move in the long term towards independence. A number of employers nationwide do credit checks, and the lower the amount of debt will mean more employers are interested in hiring you. I will include some scholarship and other sources resources to see if that can help lower your student loans.

Of course it depends on how much money you're already having to borrow and how controlling your parents are. I guess it wasn't even a question for me. I did not want to live at home and drive 45 minutes. I don't regret living in the dorms and then in apartments near campus. I don't care that I'm still paying off the loans and had to work too. I don't know if I would have ever grown up if I would have lived at home during my college years.

It kind of depends on your financial situation, but I would say move if it is not too difficult. I base it off of two things. First of all, the miles you put in your car are going to drive the value of your car down anyway and the gas money will suck even if you do have a car that gets great miles. Also, I commute to school and really the only reason I hate it is that I put in long hours at school and then have to drive home. That gets to be a pain, especially during late nights and then I have to get up extra early in order to get to class on time.

If you can afford a new car you can afford rent. Whether it's for an apartment or paid to your parents.

Get the apartment. It will help you become more resposible as a young adult and it will be more fun, too.
