How to recover the pictures from a memory stick?

I have a 1 GB Magic Gate Memory Stick PRO Duo and I get the following error message "Memory Stick Formatting Error". I have a lot of photos on the stick and would like to recover them before reformatting the stick.

If there is a problem with your card, a freeware recovery program is PC Inspector Smart Recovery available from www.convar.com. It worked for me a couple of months ago when my camera returned a 'card error' message.
