Air dry hair, condition daily, use leave-in conditioning treatments. Along with conditioner use a conditioning balm, and along with that use John Frieda Brilliant (whatever hair color you have) shining serum! That shining serum is fricken crazy! It can add shine and fix your hair!
Other than topical hair treatments:
Eat healthy and lots of protein (you'd be surprised at how a good diet can make your hair look), Drink plenty of water, get regular trims, try not to color treat your hair, but if you do use something that doesn't damage hair too much. (Garnier dyes, and I think Loreal True Match is good)

Avoid styling products with alcohol in them. Apply conditioner liberally to the lower half of your hair after watching to prevent split ends, and always squeeze hair dry rather than rubbing, as that creates frizz and breakage.
You can make your own hair masques, conditioners, and hot oil treatments to maximize health and moisture retention.

I just went to their launch party and had my hair done, free as a demo. Its amazing, my hair was breaking off and flying away. I will always always buy this stuff. Its awesome, I saw a difference as soon as she rinsed my hair. I have no damage anymore, its unbelievable! No more split-ends, its like my hair is NEW! I love it!
