My dog got fleas. I am flea dipping her and bombing the house tomorrow. Someone told me that I need to do something to the back yard too, so she wont bring them back in the house? Anyone know what/how?
Also, do I dip the dog or bomb the house first? I've never had fleas before, so its grossing me out and I dont know a whole lot about how to fix it! Help!
And, FYI, I did just notice them yesterday and the vet gave me the Advantix today, so we can prevent future flea problems. thank you!

When you say flea dip, you mean the Advantix right? Don't bathe her, OK?

Doesn't matter if you treat the dog or the house first, do them at the same time. I wouldn't use a flea bomb though, they're not great. Get a spray from a vets. You'll probably have to spray the house, vacuum the next day and repeat the process 7-10 days later to get rid of the eggs that have now hatched - Skoosh is the only spray that really kills the eggs too.

Spraying your yard is probably an idea too - although if your house and animal are properly treated, in theory no fleas would be able to survive if they did get inside.

Make sure you get the Advantix on the skin of your dog, not his fur, and don't bath him first,

I'm afraid there is no way to prevent it without spending money, unless you're extremely, extremely, extremely lucky. Fleas live in the environment i.e outside, and they are attracted in to your house by the presence of your dog. Fleas can actually sense body heat, vibration caused by movement and even the carbon dioxide in our breath - it's how they've evolved to be great at sensing a meal. Learn how to check for the presence of fleas on your dog - get yourself a flea comb and run it through his hair, particularly round the groin, belly and armpit areas, getting close to the skin. Check the hair on the comb for flea dirts - little black specks that turn red when put on wet kitchen paper. These are flea poos, a sure sign that fleas are present. You can check your dog regularly like this to see if/when he gets fleas - keeping animals indoors does not keep the safe from fleas because of course, fleas can come in houses easily. If you need to treat for fleas, please do not use any of the ridiculous stuff you can buy in stores - it doesn't work and so is a big waste of money. Get the stuff from vets like Frontline, Advantage or Revolution - it's more expensive but it actually worked. Fleas cannot be killed or repelled by any form of bathing or any 'natural' stuff like cedar or garlic - they are much tougher than that. Chalice

If you have already applyed the advantix don't dip her. It will remove the product making it uneffective. Same for regular baths, wait two to three days before giving her a bath so it will have plenty of time to spread over her body. You should definatly treat your house and yard also. A good yard product is Over and Out that can be picked up at a home depot. Its actually an ant killer but has the same active ingredient as frontline for killing fleas as well. Spread it over your whole yard. Its safe for your pet but I would wait a few hours after to spread it before letting your dogs go romping outside, being that some insectecides can irritate dogs skin.

The best way to prevent fleas once you have removed them from your house, is to put vinegar in the dog's water. Add 1 capful (about a teaspoon) per bowl of water. The smell of the vinegar emanates through the dog's skin, thus repelling the fleas. I have always put vinegar in my dogs water and they have NEVER gotten fleas and I don't use Advantix or Frontline. This is all I offer them, so they drink it. I do, however, get a spray for ticks from my vet during the spring and summer.

at any wal mart or feed store you can get a big bag of granulated type stuff to treat your yard. it lasts a long time after you put it on the yard and keeps out almost ALL insects not just fleas and ticks and it wont harm your pet. the advantix will take care of your doggy, and bomb the house and wash all bedding and stuff the dog has slept on and such. it will be a long hard fight but youll get it.

bomb the house and spray the yard at the same time, while the house is closed up. then you need to open the house to air out, while that is happening, wash the dog with flea shampoo. after he dries put the advantix on him.

be sure to shut off pilot lights in house before you bomb. furnace, water heater, oven and stove.

Advantex works great. You should try that. It lasts for a whole month and you'll never see a flea on her again. I would put the flea drops on her first, then bomb the house. Bomb your yard too. Then, your problem is done.

For the yard, make sure it's mowed regularly, and that you either bag it or rake it up. An overgrown lawn, as well as one covered in dead grass and such is the perfect breeding ground for all kinds of insects, including fleas.
