Read the directions on the box/bottle. They're put there for a reason. If it says take 2 every 4 to 6 hours. That means the recommended dose is 2. However it also means that 1 might work. If you think you need more, I suggest you call a pharmacist and let them know any other medicines you have taken and they will tell you if its ok. You can also call your doctor for the same thing, but pharmacists are trained to know all the drug interactions so they can tell you if you took something that might make the effect greater or lesser.

25 to 50mg over the counter. You can give more than 50mg but > than 50mg it is better under the supervision of a physician. when taken on a daily basis it has many side effects, the most common are constipation and dry mouth (dry mucosa). Also you have to keep an eye on other medications that can interact with benadryl

As others have said, read the box or the insert. Your Pharmacist and MD are a great resource as well. While I am not telling you what to take, I can say what *I* have taken. I have taken 100mg at a time...a couple of times for a food reaction (very allergic to almonds and didn't know something I was eating had almonds in it), and 100mg IV at the MDs office for an Iron Infusion.
Call your Pharmacist or MD for further advice as to what you should take. They are the only people who should tell you what would be appropriate for YOU :).
Good luck and feel better!

1-2 25mg pills for allergies.
50mg of Diphenhydramine will make you sleepy though (thats why the dose of otc sleeping pills are 50mg of diphenhydramine in each pill).
People who take Benadryl for recreational purposes take around 250-400mg of diphenhydramine. This dosage will cause you to experience hallucinations.

I take 50mg every night for sleep. I have had a neighbor who had poison ivy take 100mg and not get sleepy because his body needed it to fight the poison.
If you are not used to taking it, 25mg should work great.

Read the directions on the bottle. If you are an adult you will probably take 2, but I am no doctor so don't take my word for it.

An adult can take 2.... however... DO NOT DRIVE OR OPERATE HAZARDOUS MACHINERY... this is a typical warning from doctors. I usually only take 1 and go to la-la land.
