older shotguns like that many times did not have a serial number at all. If it did, it would be either on the bottom of the receiver near the trigger, or on the side of the receiver.

Sounds like you have an older Iver Johnson "Champion" Model Single Shot Shotgun. They were manufactured with an exposed hammer,plain full choke barrel, and a plain pistol grip stock. These guns were mass produced between
1909-1956. Since serialized firearms didn't start until the early 1960's.Your shotgun probably doesn't have a serial number to begin with. If you do have one of these I can give you additional information if you are interested.

It is possibly on the barrel underneath. where it lies along the wood. and almost all guns have serial. i have one from the 1800 with serial numbers. i have a bolt action 16 gauge johnson. they have serial numbers. how do i know more than these ppl and im 13? i do though

If a s/n is not redily visible on the barrel or reciever,
It was made before serial numbers were required by law.
So...
There isn't one.
That's OK.
Being as it was made BEFORE s/n's were required,
It doesn't need one.
If you want to add some specific marking with an electric pencil to assure you can identify your specific gun, (a wise decision) I recomend initialing it on the inside of the trigger guard in small letters.
