Psychiatrists make it up.

Well the psychiatric industry basically creates and lables "mental illness" and promotes the concept that it's various labels are diseases but has no medical or scientific basis for this assumption.
So the only thing we know for sure is that despite the billions of dollars they and the various drug companies are making in the so called "treatment" of mental illness, they
most definitely have no idea what causes mental illness,
and they have certainly never cured it.

This doesn't answer your question but definitely makes you think !

a varied combination of things, one of which if were absent would be enough for a mental illness to be non-existent. genetics certainly plays a primary role. If you look at families of people who are depressed you'll see the same thing even 100 years ago. Life experiences is another. the age at which a bad experience occurred. something that happens when you are 7 may not be as traumatic if you're 18. the number of traumatic instances in one's life. whether there is a strong support system of family and friends. It's all of the above that makes it difficult to "one cure for all". fortunately today, much of the suffering that ocurred years ago can be alleviated with meds and talk therapy.

The prime cause of mental illness is a physical abnormality or chemical imbalance within the brain.

When I was in group therapy there sure were and still are a lot of children being molested and raped and beaten to grow up with one. Let me be the first to say though that we do not grow up to abuse our babies because of it. I was so scared while I was raising my children, I missed a lot of appropriate intimacy because I was so scared something would come over me and I would hurt them like that. Now 25 years later, I know it was unnecessary for me to be even a little concerned, I would never put this on another human, let alone my own.
Peace

it's a gene vs. environment debate, but i won't get too much into it. I believe it's mostly childhood abuse of some type. The degree of insanity can usually be measured by the degree of the abuse. Alot of people do get over it after alot of time. some don't become mental they but they get into abusive relationship. if a person is told their stupid, worthless, they may become depress but not a psychopath.

biologically: chemical imbalance; genetics definitely

environmental: not dealing with problems over time building up, feeling like you have to "hide" things in childhood (family secrets); etc.

and yes, life in general and one's adjustments to it.

life stressors, death, trauma, etc.
