Dude, why do you wash yourself? That, I'm sorry to say has to be one of the stupidest questions asked. Why would someone was themselves? To stay clean, and everyone knows cats are the cleanest animals. Which animal has enough intelligent to hide its poop?

lol, its like asking why do humans shower? and the answer would be, To Keep Themselves clean and stay hygenic. Same with the cats and other animals, they try to stay clean and enjoy the time in the water as long as they wish, plus there is no one to help them washing them, unlike humans (mothers washing their babies).

Cats, most of them, hate water. Their tongues are very rough and when they lick themselves, all the nasty stuff they pickup get's stuck in their mouthes and they eventually hack up fur balls.

Cats always clean themselves with their Tongue,
because they have to get all their Hairball, away from their Hair. I f you look closely, or touch your Cats Tongue,it feels rough to the touch.
they have their tongue rough, to take away their Hair balls away from their fur, because they do not like to feel their fur all balled up.

I think it's probably because they don't want their prey to smell them. This is probably also the reason why they roll in the dirt when they're outside (not so clean!).
