I have been with the company for 5 years, I just moved ina leadership position which is very stressful. I have asked my boss for part time work about 6 weeks ago (which was approved) but I am still very stressed as the company hasn't provided me with the support ( i do 5 days work in 3 days). I quit on Monday without having another job. I emailed by boss as he was not at work and I am meting with him on Monday. He is very keen to keep me (he is all talk but no actions by the way - promises things that he won't keep) but I feel that I am destroying my health>> Did I make the right decision by quitting and waht shoudl I tell him on Monday??

Well, you definately do not want to burn any bridges as you may never know who he might know or may end up being your boss again in the future at another company. I would agree to stay for another 2 weeks or until he finds a replacement so that you can help train this person. You always want to leave a company on good terms. Typically, if you are in a management position, you should give a 30 day notice and if you are in a staff position then 2 weeks would be sufficient.

One thing I have learned; if the company does not professionally support you then you should ask yourself if this is the company that I wish to work for? As indicated in your question, it seems as if, for mental and physical health you might have made the correct decision and the company should respect your wishes especially if they are not true to their word. You must have a supportive workplace that comes through with their written and verbal promises and if they are not providing you with the support that you need, then you made the correct decision no matter how hard it is to admit to yourself that you did. Saying goodbye to a job that you like, is hard to let go, but think of the alternative? Which is more important to you-mental/physical health or trying to hold on to a wish/support that is not there?

Tell him you will stay for another couple of weeks so you can train your replacement if they hire a temp to do some of the work. Also only on the condition of a written reference, you type it he just needs to sign it.

He obviously wants you to stay. Tell him everything you want that would make it necessary for you to stay and make it worth your while. If you are ready for a change tell him you're not interested. Just remember you are in the driver's seat on this. If you cant get what you want, leave. If you stay make sure you get everything you negotiated in writing.
