I was asleep up stairs at my house and as I came to conciousness I realized I couldn't move. I tried so hard to move my legs and arms, but I just couldn't. I tried to scream for help but nothing came out. I layed there in my bed trying to calm down and I could hear my family talking down stairs. After I decided that there was nothing that I could do except wait for someone to come and check on me, I went back to sleep. When I woke again I could move. I thought maybe I just had a bad dream or something, until I asked my family if they were talking about what I had heard. They said yes. So, I know that it really happened. It has happened a couple of times since then too. Has this ever happened to anyone else??????

I just posted this question and I have already got feedback. Thanks. I am actually relieved that I am not the only one who has ever experienced this.

This is normal and is called sleep paralysis. When you enter REM sleep (the part of sleep in which you dream) your brain paralyses the rest of the body to prevent injury while dreaming. If you could move while dreaming, you would act out the dream and possibly injure yourself. Sleep walking is an example of dreaming while not paralysed.

What happened to you was that you only half woke up, you were aware but your body was still in sleep paralysis. This can occur occasionally, especially when you have not been sleeping well, have been using drugs or are under stress.

If you experience sleep paralysis while awake often, see your doctor who may refer you to a sleep clinic. It can be associated with a condition called narcolepsy and panic attack discorders; there is medication for it as well.

Yes, it's just a dream state. It means you're not in a deep sleep, but your body thinks you are. It's nothing to worry about, and the more you worry, the worse you'll make it.
