Your questions presumes Catholic priests have no credibility. This is wrong. Clergymen in union with the Holy See speak with the Authority.

The manner in which Catholic Clergymen dress is exactly the same as the way they dressed when the Church was founded. There is nothing in Catholic Dogma that demands a clergyman's attire change with the times. That is why it is not done.

The collar is a symbol of their commitment to God. Just like when people get married they wear a wedding ring to symbolize their commitment to each other. The collar thing is thought to be a Catholic thing, because most Catholic priest wear it, but it is a universal outfit. Most Catholic priest don't have many assorted clothing like other priests or pastors. So, it's not really a Catholic clerics dress code, it's men who vowed to serve their lives to God outfit.

My pastor does not dress like a priest. He wears a simple suit, as do most of the men in the church.
As for their credibility, we need pastors, which are like shepards guiding the flock. When Christ came, He took the place of the priests. We no longer need them to intercede or make sacrifices for us. Through Christ, we now have direct access to the Father. We need only to pray in the name of Jesus, and confess directly to God, and ask for forgiveness in the name of the Son. No act of contrition needed, for Christ already paid the price. You catholics need to place your faith in Christ, not in your church. In your church, there is only ritual. In Christ, there is true salvation. Perfect salvation, with no need for a purgatory, for one can NEVER be good enough for heaven. It is only through Christ that we may enter in.
