Darby's Rangers - the First American Ranger Battalion.
Based on the British Commandos, they were created to conduct deep-penetration raids behind enemy lines, and amphibious raids on enemy-held coasts. Read the book by James Altieri called 'The Spearheaders' for more information.

there were 5 ranger regiments during ww2.the most famous being darbys rangers that took point du hoc on d day.but there was also the 6th reg in the phillipins that rescued the prisoners at caubuanataan in the phillipines and merrills marauders in burma. all weretasked as a light infrantry force skilled in raiding behind the enemy lines and other long range attacks without standard supporting arms or airpower.check out armyranger.com for a ton of info

They had many roles during WWII but they are most remembered for scaling point Du hoc in Normandy on D-Day. i think it was the 1st and 2nd and 3rd Ranger battalions that made the initial landing and I am sure there were other units I just don't know them all.
