The T34/76 was the basic version used from 1940 until 1943. There were versions that redesigned the cupola, and uparmored it, but by with the introduction of the Panther, it was becoming obsolete. Besides the lack of penetrating power to knock out Panthers, Tigers and uparmored StuG III's it still had a two-man turret, and radios were a hit-or-miss proposition. In late 1943, the Soviets upgunned the T34 with an 85mm gun that was originally a naval antiaircraft weapon. This required a redesigned turret, which enabled them to add a dedicated loader to the vehicle, and a radio. The 85mm had roughly the same hitting power as the US/Brit 76mm with APDS ammunition.
For the US, it would have to be the Pershing. The Sherman was obsolescent for much of the European War (the Pacific was another story-it was very successful in that theater). The ultimate WW2 version was the "Easy-8" with more armor, better suspension, and a high-velocity 76mm gun with better ammunition.
For Germany it would have to be the Panther. Fast, with an extremely high-velocity 75mm/L70 gun (it had more hitting power than the 88L56 on the Tiger I); it also had sloped armor, wide tracks-which gave it more mobility than other German tanks. There was a Panther II that reached initial production at the end of the war which was armed with the same 88mm gun as the King Tiger. Panthers also had a first-generation night-sight issued in April 1945.

If you can mass produce them more quickly than the enemy can destroy them, then yes, you have an effective tank. The Sherman was very mobile, easy to repair, and could be produced quickly. When the larger gun was added later in the war, and the soft spots on German tanks were identified, it was a very effective tank indeed when used in numbers. German Tigers were heavily armored, and had big guns, but they were very slow and burned too much fuel. The Russian tanks were probably pound for pound most effective.

popular opinion states that the best Russian tank in WW2 was the T34/85 tank, it was strong reliable, and they making a ******* ton of them, American tanks, the most powerful was the Pershing, but they enterd the war too late to be used in great numbers. the americans used the sherman, which was best used in numbers to atttack german tanks, due to its weaker gun and lighter armor than most german medium and heavy tanks

T.34 Russian Tank & the Sherman.
The reason they were better was there were more of them being made and losses were easily replaceable.
The German Tanks were harder to manufacturer and once their veteran crews were killed or captured and the tanks knocked out, it was harder for Germany to replace them.
