I say you can't join the military with numerous arrests on your record for things like assault and public drunkenness. Yet a buddy of mine says that he knows a guy in the Army Special Forces with such a record, and to top it off, he says the guy brags about "killing is awesome-- and I'm getting paid to do it!" I say that's a load of bull.

I should add that my friend's buddy was supposedly arrested one time for assaulting a police officer-- while in his senior year in high school. My buddy didn't give too many details except that the guy "is nuts, and his family's afraid of him". Again, I really don't think the Army would actually want such a person-- especially in SF.

He is full of crap! A special operator has to maintain his clearance and a civil arrest would most certainly be the end of that, further if he was convicted he would be out of the SOF community in a hurry and probably out of the service shortly thereafter.

It is possible to get waivers for certain past criminal actions. Still, a large number of violations, or extremely serious ones, make it unlikely for someone to get accepted. One assult, or a couple of public drunkeness violations might not be too bad, but numerous one? Yeah, that's hard to believe. As for whether your buddy's buddy is really SF or not, I just don't know. Most SF guys I've met don't brag or say crap like that, but every group has a blowhard or two, and he could just be saying stuff like that to be shocking. Some guys have a pretty sick sense of humor. Others use gallows humor as a way to cope with what they've seen and done. Most likely though, this guy is a wannabe, if he even exists.

We're the arrests felonies or misdemeanors and was this guy already in the military when these crimes happened ? If this person committed the crimes as a civilian, there is know way he was accepted in any branch of the United States service. However if He was in the military when the crimes occurred , the military takes care of it's own. I'd say that is a load of bull.

sometimes you can, it just depends on your recruiter, her/his command, and how desperate they are. When I joined the army in 1996 there was a guy there with a stack of papers from his parole officer and he said that one of his raps was for assault, he got in with the requirement of a 6 year active contract. I'd imagine that it would be easier to get in right now given the military, (especially army and marines), current low recruit numbers.

Unless you have a serious mental defect, killing is not awesome, and it sure as hell isn't something you brag about. It is something you do to protect yourself and your team. And the others responses are also accurate, SF operators don't go around advertising their line of work. This guy is full of crap.

I think that the guy who says he is in Special Forces is full of crap. Guys who are in the special operations forces don't even tell most family members let alone friends. Anyone that ever tells you they were/are a Navy Seal, Army Ranger, Green Beret, Delta Force Operator, or Marine Recon is lying. Authentic Special Ops guys never and I mean never advertise their line of work. They are not so insecure about themselves that they need to show off for approval. They are committed and disciplined troops.

Why would you believe here say? Find out for yourself. Run your own background checks. Sounds like you might qualify. Take it to another recruiter in the Army.
Let me know how it goes

US Army 15 years
OIF 2003

It is bull. No one who is a warrior ever says something so insane as that. If he did his leaders would have him in front of a "shrink" before he could get his boots laced up.
