People who do this for a living are usually psychologists. Of course not all psychologists put much stock in dream interpretation and, frankly, by themselves dreams aren't very meaningful in helping someone. Sometimes they provide glimpses into things that are bothering one but they are only a piece of the puzzle, as it were.

To be a psychologist, of course, you need not only a bachelor's degree but at least a masters. A PhD is helpful if you want to do any writing where someone actually pays attention to you. By the time you reach the masters level, you should realize whether you have any talent in dream interpretation at all. Some seem to have a talent for it and lose it later for some reason.
Sometimes the best interpreters are psychologists who love to put the pieces together in many different ways. It is difficult to understand sometimes how the pieces of someone's dream do fit together.

Lastly, dream interpretation is a gift and one can always be wrong, especially when taking one piece or another and trying to fit it in. One should be familiar with various genres of dream interpretation as one method does not always work. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Lastly, the most accurate dream interpreters are those who are naturally inspired by the Holy Spirit. Examples of these are Daniel and Joseph from the Bible. It is a very rare set of qualities which combine to make this sort of person. Many religious people have certain insights into dreams at various times and they can be very helpful, but it is not a gift that one can turn on and off. One has to know the source of that kind of revelation, as it were. Sometimes someone believes he knows something about dream interpretation which turns out to be wrong and can sometimes be damaging to the patient. Learning how to know the truth about dreams in any given situation can be very difficult.

know this will sound funny but it was pretty horrific for my mate. She dreamt that she was washing the dishes when suddenly a potato (oh, crikey, this is already sounding bad :-p) rooted in her hand and began growing. These potatoes sprouted all over her arms and legs and would evenutally fall off and new ones would sprout in their place. The experience was frightening and painful. I never even laughed - I could imagine the pockmarked skin and see the fear in her eyes this is your dream this is what it means .... Words like hand: Capacity and competence. Words like eyes: Vision. Consciousness and clarity. You will have a pleasant and profitable business and a congenial companion.
