My dog sits in my lap. Sometime she will turn towards me and sit up on her butt and put her paws on my shoulder and stares at me. Sometimes she takes her paw and tries to touch my face. What do you think she is trying to say?

That sounds so cute....I imagine your dog doing this and it just makes me smile. I would take it that she is trying to let you know she really loves you, feels comfortable around you. Maybe she wants to play or go outside. When my dogs do something like that that catches my attention, I will look at them and ask. "what do you want?" I will get up and see what they do. They may run to the kitchen..so I will follow them. If they look or move toward the cabinet where the food is, I will guess they are hungry. (especially when it's near dinner time) Or, if they run to the back door...I know that's what they were trying to tell me...they want to go outside. Sometimes it would be so nice if dogs could talk....it's so hard to figure out what they are trying to tell you. But if you react, they may be able to tell you in other ways. Watch your dog and try to learn what her expressions and actions are trying to tell you...it's all about trying to read their language...and you know your dog better than anyone else.

She is showing affection by gently touching you. Standing up on you in a large breed dog is a dominance behavior, i never had a lap dog-though pit bulls usually think they are lap dogs! I had to stop my pit bull from putting her paws on my skin cuz they're rough, but she also likes to "pet" me how I pet her. Now she knows to touch me with her nose. If this behavior bothers you, just firmly correct her each time she does it. Dogs express love like we do, and they have the same emotions as we do. But more than affection, they crave order and rules! It's just insinct. PS they do reason, just not the way we do, though it is certainly no less than out reasoning. After all, we're the ones screwing the planet up.

Sounds like she might be bored and wants to play with you. Try getting down on all fours and slapping your hands down on the floor like youre trying to get her paws. When she starts running around in circles fake chase her around the room. My 250 pound bro-in- law does this all the time with his tiny shitzu which they both love. Very funny and cute.

Dogs get a lot of information from our faces. She could be watching and sniffing your face in order to figure out what YOU are thinking! Pawing at you often means that she wants something from you.

My dog does that when she needs to go out or when she wants something to eat. I stand up and ask "Show me what you want" and she either goes to the door or the kitchen.

It sounds like she is just trying to play or wants attention. Try playing with it after that and see what the response is
