1. Microsoft company makes Windows operating system. There are many difference operating systems. Here are a few:
95
98
98 SE (Second Edition)
ME (Millennium)
2000 (Professional Edition and Server Edition)
XP (Experience): Home Edition and Professional Edition
2003 (this is a server operating system)
Vista
2008 (it was named Longhorn, now Microsoft has changed it to 2008)

2. Apple company makes:
Mac OS X Server
Mac OS X Tiger (works on Intel chipsets and processor)

3. Unix or Linux (they are the same but difference creators with difference kernel file system). AT&T company invents Unix/Linux in the early 1970s
Suse
Fedora
Red Hat
FreeBSD

Note: GNOME, KDE, and X Windows System are graphical and application package. They are totally not an operating system.

All windows based , Microsoft you pay for...Mac you pay for both through the nose... mac is another version of Linux
both MS and Mac systems your tied too for everything and you pay the price

Linux leaves Microsoft in the dark ages it is a far more advanced operating system and all the software also comes free...there is well over 27,000 software packages, you can download off the internet. free including games,
All Linux commercial software up data are also free, so you get the best of both worlds with Linux,
