Ok, alot of things here...
Bindings?
Styles?
Brands?
a good ski with bindings would land you around 1200..
Alpine skis are around 500-700 w/o bindings.
Telemark skis are around 300-500 w/o bindings.
Freestyle skis are around 250-500 w/o bindings.
Stay away from Atomic, and Rossingol. They are the most expensive, you can always find good deals on Salomon, and K2..
so final answer, Depends on what you want to do.

Skis are fairly expensive. It depends on what kind of skis you are looking for. New race skis run about $700 - $1000 including bindings. Freestyle skis are generally a little cheaper ($400 - $700). You can find quality used skis at swaps for $200 - $400.

If you don't mind using some rental skis they already have bindings mounted that will fit your ski boots because they are adjustable. I bought two reasonable pairs for $75 last year. They were a couple of years old, but newer than what I had. I am still using them this year.
