what is it called when someone makes up stories about bad things that have happened to them or exaggerated things to be worse than they really are just to get some sort of reaction or attention from others.

It's actually not a named disorder, per se, but it is a symptom of a number of mental health issues -- including Münchhausen's By proxy and Borderline Personality Disorder.

Its not actually a named disorder as the case may be but its have connection with problems ralating to Mental or psychological Personality Disorder which is as a result of stressfull pains experienced.

The figure of speech use to qualify such statement is called Hyperbole which is overstatement. Why most stories are exaggerated is to ensure that the hearer to understand the gravity of the impact of what happened and how grave was the consequence.

The speaker hyperbolized the statement as to get accurate and equal response from the hearer having in mind the likely consequences of what event and its enormity on its victim.

A person would have to meet a lot of other criteria as well, but those symptoms can be found in people with Borderline Personality Disorder and Histrionic Personality Disorder.

Sometimes people who have "missing time" memory lapses will make up a story to try to fill in their hole. They may very well believe their own "story".

This happens in Multiple Personality Disorder
