I bred cocker spaniels for about 20 years. My last litter was in 1998. I'm not sure what I would charge now...but I think the going rate for a pet quality cocker in my area is around $500...that's what I bought my cocker Zoe for.
Edit: I think the asker is asking htis quesiton out of curiosity. She isn't wanting to breed. I think she has an idea that it is expensive to breed dogs. SHe asked a simple question. I answered it simply and get thumbs down for it.
In response to Gotnewfs comment about a good breeder doesn't sell boys or girls or show vs pet for different prices....maybe that's not the thing to do now....but when I bred and show'd cockers in the 80's and 90's, this is what breeders in my local and national breed club did. Show quality puppies wern't normally sold until the puppy was older and, yes, ended up costing more to sell because it older and was on it's way to be trained as a show dog. Breeders would evaluate thier litters young and select the ones to keep that they felt had the potential to turn out show quality. Some breeders would keep more than one, just in case. I don't know many, who wanted a show quality pup, buy one at 8 - 12 weeks of age. The breeder usually kept it until she felt comfortable selling it as a show quality dog. Even if the litter was out of a great line....competition in cockers was very tough. You had to be very selective on what you would show. Anyway...I could go on an on...but I think the rules of selling and prices could also depend on the breed.

Newfoundlands...on a VERY limited basis. Puppies are usually $1,800. Sometimes less depending on certain situations.
Yeah, you would think that at that price I would be just rolling in the $$$ huh. I have NEVER made money on a litter. Showing alone is expensive!!!!!!!! Health clearances, stud fees, vaccines, worming, vet checks, microchipping, pregnancy care, puppy aptitude testing, food for puppies, heart checks at Cornell.........all that plus all the extra when there are complications or sick bit ches. It never ends. Then you have a litter with THREE pups and you are WAY behind the 8 ball in the $$ department!!! I never have large litters. The most was 7, but one died. Most of my litters are 5.
I am not seeing a wealth of "good breeders" here. Good and knowledgable breeders don't charge based on the sex of the puppy. And pet quality is the same as show quality. They both cost the same to raise!!!!!!!

I breed Basset Hounds occasionally. It's been three years since I've had a litter, but I believe the going rate around here is currently $1200 - $1500.
EDIT: Like the others, I'm not making money either. My house is over 100 years old and badly in need of repair (and a new furnace) and my car is 14 years old. Everything goes to the dogs.

I breed Shetland Sheepdogs when I breed, which hasn't been for awhile. What I charge depends on the quality of the pup, and the person who wants it. I have given pups to homes that ar the best for the pup. I usually try to price pet quality pups for what the local BYB's would charge because I want to teach them the value of a good quality pup. I figure that will help inspire them to go to responsible breeders and recommend resposnible breeders to their friends in the future.

If you're considering this, you should know that a good breeder is lucky to break even on a litter of puppies- mostly you lose money on them. Raising puppies is more expensive than the money you can sell them for. And there are already too many homeless dogs in the world.

I breed (askal) dalmatian. It's just like a dalmatian but has bigger spots. When we give it's puppies, a girl costs about 350 and a boy is just 300. If I breed my Japanese Spitz, a boy would be 3000 and a girl would be 3500.
